2004/2005 Performances

In the past, Concert Band performed a Winter Concert, Spring Concert, All District Band Festival, and a Final Concert at the end of the year. This year a Fall Concert was added to our schedule.

The Fall Concert featured a piece by Alfred Hitchcock film composer Bernard Hermann. We also performed three pieces that have been based on the poems and short stories of Edgar Allen Poe. Other selections performed at this concert were "In The Hall of the Mountain King" and "Night on Bald Mountain."

Our next concert, the Winter Concert, featured music that written by American composer Richard Saucedo. In 2002, the Concert Band performed a piece entitled "Antares" that was also composed by Richard Saucedo.

In anticipation of a great movie that released on May 19, 2005, the Spring Concert featured music from the previously released movies of the film series. These are all great movies and so is the music from the films.

The Final Concert at the end of this year did not have any special theme. Like the past two years, the students were allowed to choose the final piece of the concert. Even though we have no basic theme for this concert, the music was entertaining.

2003/2004 Performances

This past school year, the NPHS Concert Band performed at three on-campus concerts, one SCSBOA Festival, and the 22nd Annual All District Band Festival at the Countrywide Performing Arts Center of the Civic Arts Plaza.

Our first performance was the Winter Concert where the students performed orchestral transcriptions of music from different time periods. The concert opened with "Folk Dances" by Dimitri Shostakovich. Students also had the chance to perform music by Bach, Mozart, and Saint-Saens. One of the biggest highlights of the concert was our performance of "Peter and the Wolf" which was narrated by NPHS English Teacher, Mr. Ellis. We closed our concert with a transcription of "Bolero" by Maurice Ravel.

The second performance of the year was our Spring Concert. This concert had a multi-cultural theme. We opened the concert with "The Dream Catcher" by Francis McBeth. This piece was composed using Native American melodies. The students also performed music based on folk tunes from Russia, France, Spain, and England. The concert closed with the famous John Philip Sousa piece, "The Stars and Stripes Forever".

Our third performance, the 22nd Annual All District Band Festival, was held in the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Countrywide Performing Arts Center of the Civic Arts Plaza. Performing in this venue was a wonderful opportunity for the students. It was a great experience for them to be able to perform on such a large stage. The finale included all the elementary school, middle school, and high school students joining together to perform "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven.

At our Final Concert, the students performed modern music that has been composed within the past 25 years. We opened the concert with a transcription of "Machine" by William Bolcom. Other selections in the concert included "Bells" by Ian McDougall, "Firedance" by Bill Whalen, a medley of Earth, Wind and Fire tunes, and "On a Hymnsong of Lowell Mason" by David Holsinger. Keeping with a tradition we started last year, the students were allowed to choose the last piece performed in the concert. This year, the students selected "The Impressario" by Mozart.
